ChatGPT and similar new AI models have taken the world by storm recently. They promise to upend how we do everything. But how do we turn that promise into a practical reality? For example, how can we use it to enhance our hiring?

An AI Internship

We decided to find an intern to help us explore our two main interests in applying the new AI technology: coding and hiring. This intern will explore the tools, experiment with how they enhance these two activities, and then help us adopt new improved practices.

After putting together a job description, we used ChatGPT-4 to rewrite it in 5 different styles, with a prompt consisting of the job description plus this:

You are a master of writing in various styles. Rewrite the following message
in 5 different styles, all aimed at making it as attractive as possible to the
right candidates.

It produced five different styles under these headings:

  • Style 1: Enthusiastic & Informal
  • Style 2: Elegant & Sophisticated
  • Style 3: Storytelling
  • Style 4: Inspiring & Empowering
  • Style 5: Friendly & Conversational

A taste of the role

The initial impulse was to take the best of these and try again to refine them using AI tools. That way we’d end up with the strongest possible message for the right candidates. But wait! Doing that passes on an opportunity to give a taste of the role to all potential applicants.

Instead of refining a single post, the job page now lets you flip tabs among the various versions, plus the prompt version. Now each candidate can see our work in process and how we think about creatively leveraging AI tools.

Aiming for engagement

So far all applicants have submitted from the top level or the prompt. I look forward to hearing from the first candidate who demonstrates stronger instinct for this learning game and submits via their favorite version(s) and tells us what they thought of this approach, good or bad or otherwise.
